Cornish College Year 10 Camp Blog
In anticipation of Cornish College and everything we had heard and read about the amazing school it is, we were preparing for what we knew was going to be an amazing week. The energy and enthusiasm of all the students was almost out of control and we loved it. The other coaches and I gathered in the Lodge with them to introduce ourselves and our Five Keys of Have Fun, Play All In, Make Mistakes, Get Comfortable being Uncomfortable, and Don’t Go Home Wondering What If, before playing a couple of games, showing everyone our harnesses and how to set themselves Targets, Stretches and Super Stretches, and getting into our first couple of rounds of activities.
Snowy River and the Flying Fox were the instant highlights, the High Wire was epic, and it was just fun to be able to explore the grounds on Orienteering. There were definitely many personal boundaries pushed and fears overcome, along with the realization that this week was going to be like no other they had experienced.
Towards the end of the first day, each group was asked to come up with a name for themselves that was agreed upon by all, and these are the group names:
Grp 1 - The Rubber Duckies
Grp 2 - Toooooo Many Flames
Grp 3 - Treble makers
Grp 4 - Fera FC
After an evening Trivia game on Monday, Tuesday was kicked off with a morning Intentions chat about setting up your day before getting straight into the next round of activities. The afternoon turned out to be a bit wet and cool, but everyone was so into the activities we couldn’t tell.
Before lunch we had the opportunity to start another round of activities, this time introducing the students to our epic Rock Wall, Bush Challenge, Laser Skirmish, and one of our most exciting activities on camp, The Giant Swing! It was so awesome to see almost every student give it a go!
Tuesday afternoon was a fantastic outreach activity of making meals for the disadvantaged before a movie night with The Greatest Showman. It was a fantastic opportunity to wind down and relax to be able to power through the rest of the week.
On Wednesday we had another chat about intentions and choices before a full day of activities. Day three saw the introduction of the dreaded Sky Bridge, the towering Summit Window, the wild Scavenger Hunt, and the awesome Inflatable City.
On Thursday morning we chatted about making the most of the time we have here with our Jelly Bean video and a game of Jockeys before more activities. We also introduced everyone to the terrifying Leap of Faith, our Abseiling challenge, the scary Cave, and our incredible pets Mitch and Monty in our Snake and Nails.
Thursday afternoon we also embarked on our epic Monster Course, a mud run around the grounds of The Summit involving tyres, charades, mud, cargo nets, holey buckets, mud, a ball pit, and more mud! The course was scored using each team's improvement time from the first lap to the surprise second lap, with everyone doing amazingly, but being dominated by both Too Many Flames and the Treble Makers.
Friday started with another chat about gratitude in the form of giving and receiving Street Compliments before we completed our round of activities.
We then asked each of the kids to vote for a Values winner, or the person in their group they felt used our Five Keys the best to make camp a rewarding experience for not only themselves but their whole team. The winners are listed below with all the times for each of the recordable activities. We gathered on the stage to say our thank you’s to all the people involved in making this camp epic before reading out the winners of the various activities.
Thank you so much to the teachers and students from Cornish College for an awesome week. You were all so incredibly dedicated to ensuring your camp was an amazing experience. We at The Summit can’t wait to have you back again soon.
