Southern Cross Grammar Year 5 Camp Blog

On the 4th of September, Southern Cross Grammar entered The Summit ready to take on a journey. With incredible energy and excitement to get into the action, your enthusiasm was infectious! What an action-packed 3 days we had planned for you all, let us jog our memory of your time here at The Summit.

Day 1 started off by meeting all 6 coaches that guided you through your camp experience. Your coaches were Logan, Zoe, Sarah, Ordile, Aron, and Sara. You also became familiar with our Five Keys and if we used them would make camp go from good to GREAT!

The Five Keys were:

  1. Have Fun

  2. Play All In

  3. Make Lots of Mistakes

  4. Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

  5. Don’t Go Home Wondering What If

As your excitement to begin the activities for camp was raised, we got straight into a game to get our bodies moving and set the tone for camp. A classic game called 50 Up. The objective is to keep the ball up off the ground by bouncing the ball amongst everybody. Straight after the game, we got straight into what we call a group initiative.

An initiative is a team task we introduce to each group with one simple goal. To come up with a solution. To test the group and discover who, when, and why people within the group begin to take action. For the groups to make a decision on solving the task without assistance verbally or physically from the coach. After the initiative, the team and the coach have a very good understanding of the areas where the team needs improvement (teamwork, support, communication).

Next, the goal-setting strategy that would help us get the most out of our activities was shared. Setting 3 goals for when we got to an activity that made us nervous and would help us face those fears to the best of our ability. We then became familiar with the goal-setting technique. 3 goals that if set, would allow us to get the most out of camp.

The 3 goals are as follows:

TARGET: Something you know you can do. (not nervous at all)

STRETCH: Something you think you can do but are not 100% sure. (nerves setting in)

SUPER-STRETCH: Something you think would be impossible for you to do. (really nervous)

The incredible thing about camp here at The Summit is that all our activities are designed to (at some point) seem impossible for you to do. However, all activities at The Summit are possible and it's entirely up to you to face your fears and conquer them on your own terms. We then got split up into our activity groups and began our first 2 activities for camp!

All our activities for your experience here at The Summit were as follows:

Laser Tag, dodging and weaving through our laser war zone striving to eliminate the opposition.

Bush Challenge, racing through as a team completing obstacles, and testing your physical and mental skills. Great work Kanish on your teamwork!

Rock Wall, is the ultimate challenge of physical and mental strength, testing your will to keep climbing up through fear. Excellent work Jennifer on your determination to conquer!

Inflatables, breaking up some of the action with more action focusing on just having fun!

Flying Fox, a fast and furious journey across the entire park zipping through the air and enjoying the spotlight. Amazing work Aidan on displaying your courage!

Highwire, scaling a tree to then balance across a thin wire with your partner and come down together like a boss.

Tash’s Ladder, summiting a ladder on top of a 10-meter tower and leaning over with no hands. Great job Mia on crushing this!

The Cave, moving through an epic small underground tunnel with no light to give hope and no sounds to comfort, challenging our fear of the unknown, and realizing the difference between perception and reality.

Day 2 was already here! We start the morning off with breakfast followed by Logan talking to us all about how you want your day to make a deliberate choice. Logan asked us about who we wanted to be for the day (supportive, brave, funny, leaders) and to make a choice before we got down into the park. “You don’t attract what you want, you attract what you are”.

To get our bodies moving and to begin the day with success we went down into the park to play an epic game of Pirates. Congrats to all those who ended up being the winners of the pirate ship! Next, we continued with 3 more activities for the morning. What an action-packed morning we had planned for you. However, it wasn’t over yet! After a delicious lunch to fuel us for the afternoon, we finished the day with one last activity. Finally, we were about to begin the epic journey that would push you physically and mentally. The moment we had only heard rumors about it, it was time for the Monster Course! Running in our teams through a mud run obstacle course linked together by hand to achieve not only the best time but also a closer connection to our fellow peers and teammates. After the first lap we followed it up with a surprise, we told you we were going to do it twice! What a sight to see. Pushing ourselves to limits we hadn’t reached before. Congratulations to all those who truly pushed through and demonstrated to themselves a new level of resilience. Fantastic job Jai for pushing through sticking with the team and supporting everyone on the balancing logs.

Day 3 was already on the horizon! We began with some breakfast followed by a gratitude session with Logan. This encouraged us to use gratitude as a tool to instantly FEEL joy and happiness when reflecting on the often unappreciated things we have in life. “Gratitude affects your attitude and in turn, affects your altitude”. Next, we played an intense game of Jockeys to get ourselves moving and got straight into our last 2 activities for camp. What an epic way to finish off an incredible camp. Last but not least each team voted for two people in your group who best demonstrated our Five Keys and who best demonstrated the most heart and courage. Congrats to Rehan, Chloe, Rayan, Sienna, Ethan, Daksh, Jayden, and Azaan, for playing all in and rocking it throughout camp. However, camp wasn’t over yet. These lucky group winners got to take a first-class seat in our WW2 army tank as it went around our mud track!

Wow. Thank you, Southern Cross Grammar, for coming back to The Summit. You are all EPIC!

Keep Unleashing Your Greatness!
